Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms may become severe over time. If symptoms of social anxiety disorder are not addressed promptly, they can begin to take over a person's life, eventually causing a disorder known as agoraphobia. Sufferers may experience the following symptoms of social anxiety disorder:

Social Anxiety Symptoms

  • Distress, anxiety or panic when being watched or observed while doing something. This is commonly referred to as performance anxiety.
  • A fear of meeting important people such as a new boss or figure of authority
  • Feelings of insecurity and being out of place in social situations
  • Avoiding feared social or performance situations
  • While enduring feared social situations, you experience stress and anxiety
  • Feelings of embarrassment when having to deliver a presentation or formal statement in front of a group, whether large or small
  • Shyness when meeting anyone new
  • A marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others.
  • Exposure to a feared social situation almost invariably provokes anxiety, which may take the form of an anxiety attack or panic attack.
  • You may Recognize that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.

SAD is often accompanied by physical social anxiety symptoms and may include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, difficulty talking and nausea or other stomach discomfort.

These visible symptoms of social anxiety disorder heighten the fear of disapproval and the symptoms of social anxiety themselves can become an additional focus of fear. Fear of of experiencing social anxiety symptoms can create a vicious cycle. The more that people with social phobia worry about experiencing the symptoms, the greater their chances of developing them.
